Petition to Graduate
All students are required to start the Petition to Graduate process in good time, which is one calendar year before you intend to graduate.
That means spring quarter for juniors, aiming to graduate in June of their senior year.
What to do:
Determine the deadline for your Petition to Graduate submission. This is a firm deadline.
Review the WCAS page on the Petition to Graduate process in detail.
Review your Degree Progress sheet in CAESAR; this is the record used to document fulfillment of NU degree, and then also major/minor requirements. Almost everyone needs some adjustments or updates
If you consider the courses listed in the Degree Progress to be complete and correct, then please proceed to submitting the FREVVO Petition to Graduate form.
If you consider that there are issues with your Degree Progress – please make a list of the changes you are requesting. That may be courses that are missing from your major/minor requirements, or courses that are in your major/minor, but that you need ot have removed so that they may be counted instead for a different major/minor.
Email your list to the DUS who will decide if an in person meeting is required, OR if they recommend you submit and your list will be included by the DUS in the Petition to Graduate given approval to the Registrar’s Office to effect the changes.
Please know that your Petition to Graduate is just STARTING a process of review that will take months and by hitting “submit” you are opening doors (nothing is locked or closed).
Once submitted- have great patience as it may be 2-4+ months for processing.
Almost all students have major/minor requirement that will be fulfilled in their Senior year. You do not need to know exactly which courses those will be, but it is strategic to have a plan.
IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT YOU USE THE SAME CATALOG YEAR THAT YOU LISTED WHEN YOU DECLARED THE MAJOR/MINOR. You can find out what catalog year is on record for you, by reviewing the PDF view of your Degree Progress in CAESAR. You must select the PDF view in order to see this information. It does not show up on the screen – it only appears on the PDF.
Graduation petition deadlines are posted on the Registrar’s webpage.
- For Fall Quarter Graduation, that is typically June.
- For Winter Quarter Graduation, that is typically October
- For Spring Quarter Graduation, that is typically December.
- For Summer Quarter Graduation, that is typically April.
Deadlines for submitting the Petition to Graduate posted on the Registrar’s Webpage are authoritative and final for that year.
